Sherri specializes in content
development and strategic management for children's media and public
media.
She is Director of the
Media Education Lab at Temple
University and the media business lecturer on the faculty. Recent
projects of the Lab include creation of an digital learning environment
for preteen girls called My Pop Studio.
This site uses interactive games and creative activities to
strengthen media literacy skills.
Sherri's commitment to public media is reflected in her more than
eighteen years working with public broadcasting and as a media executive.
Currently, Sherri serves as a consultant to
PBS Kids Sprout and the
Corporation for Public Broadcasting. She is also leading strategic
planning efforts for several public television stations as part of CPB's Small Station Strategic Planning Initiative. Sherri previously served as General
Manager of WYBE Public TV in
Philadelphia. She also held a senior executive position with
New Jersey Public Broadcasting
and provided consulting services to WLIW-TV in New York.
Sherri served on several
national panels charged with planning future components of the industry,
including the CPB Digital Consultation Panel, the Affinity Group Coalition,
and the Legislative Advisory Group for the
Association of Public Television
Stations.
She was the co-creator of the Beta Station Group, representing a select
group of public TV stations. Sherri was an invited speaker to the
University of Chicago's symposium on the Future of Public Broadcasting
and authored a similarly titled article for the journal
TV Quarterly.
Her production background includes executive producing and producing
over 600 hours of public television programming including talk shows,
documentaries, town meetings and dramas.
Sherri holds a masters in Public Culture from the University of Pennsylvania.
Her research explored the impact of children's television on the social
development of girls and their ability to form ethnically-diverse
friendships. She is the author of the book, The Television and
Video Survival Guide: An Insiders Top Notch Creative and Technical
Advice for Your First (or next) Production.
Sherri's enthusiastic style makes her a sought after and entertaining
public speaker. She has presented at numerous conferences, including
Turn Beauty Inside Out, Strong Women/Strong Girls, United Nations
Day in Philadelphia, and the Affirmative Action Association. Sherri
has made numerous television appearances and has hosted several television
talk shows, including countless hours of public television pledge
drives! She was recognized by Women in Communications with a Sarah
Award for broadcasting and was featured as the cover story of the
Philadelphia Inquirer's Sunday magazine with the headline "Full
Spectrum TV".
Sherri currently serves on the board of the Alliance
for a Media Literate America, the leading organization nationally
dealing with issues of media literacy. She also serves on the board
of Women's Way,
and as board co-chair for Woodrock
Human Relations Organization for Youth. She serves on the Media
Literacy committee of Girls, Inc. and is member of the Future of Public
Media Initiative at the Center for Social Media. Sherri has volunteered
as a counselor with the Birch
Family Camp, a camp for children and families affected by AIDS,
for the past eleven summers. She resides in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
